In 2018, HODINKEE undertook the task of re-issuing one of history’s greatest and most elusive chronographs – the Heuer Carrera Skipper 7745, nicknamed ‘Skipperrera’. Less than 20 examples of the Skipperrera are known to exist – produced in 1967 to commemorate Emil Mosbacher’s victory at the America’s Cup. Now, the 7745 Ref. is considered one of the most collectible Heuers in the world.
In collaboration with TAG Heuer, HODINKEE sought to reinterpret this legendary model in a modernised package while incorporating all the beloved design elements of the vintage Heuer Carrera. This watch has had a noticeable size-up from 36mm to 39mm and features a domed sapphire crystal offering a similar profile to the plexi used in vintage models. The watch’s regatta countdown features the same vivid tri-color layout, but in updated 10-minute intervals. Critically, the inclusion of the Calibre 18 movement has allowed for the incorporation of a date complication in tribute to the Carrera Dato 45.
Etched into the sapphire caseback is the watch’s limited edition number (XXX/125). It is also presented on a black leather strap with a Heuer signed clasp. Alongside its contemporary aesthetic and fundamentally cool character, this touching tribute to the Skipperrera has become a modern grail watch in itself. Produced in a highly limited supply, the term ‘future classic’ certainly applies to this collaboration.
