Heuer’s prolific and widely revered associations to motorsport are unchallenged in the watchmaking world. The iconography of sixties motorsports has become synonymous with Heuer’s legacy and innovative spirit during the brand’s golden era. What drives the enchantment for vintage Heuer watches, cementing them as ‘holy grail’ pieces, is the fact that many were hand-selected by icons of motorsports to wear and enjoy. For the case of the Autavia 3646, it was 1978 F1 Championship winner Mario Andretti who was photographed on several occasions wearing this rare chronograph.
The most distinguishing feature of the 3646 Ref. is the sword-shaped hands – a signature of earlier Autavia models. Unique to this model, the Zurich-based retailer ‘Galli’ is stamped on the dial above the six o’clock marker. Powered by the esteemed Valjoux 72 movement, this beautifully aged example features a second execution dial with smaller registers, applied steel markers and lume dots for hours.
A true vintage holy grail piece overflowing with history and motorsports connection. This Autavia 3646 from circa 1965 is a collection-defining watch.
