Manufactured in the early 1970s, this Heuer Bundeswehr 1550 SG was originally crafted to be adorned on the wrist of a Bundeswehr pilot. As a staple of military timekeeping, the esteemed ‘˜Bund’ is a prominent part of Heuer history and utilitarian by nature, boasting an array of functions in the aid of servicemen in the German military.
Due to the time-based restrictions of a pilot’s duties in the flight deck, the Bundeswehr was equipped with the flyback complication, allowing pilots to instantly restart the chronograph with one push of a button, as opposed to three. Additionally this watch features the convenient hacking mechanism, enabling the watch to be synchronized with a secondary timepiece or to be used as reference signal.
This configuration features a red 3H symbol etched below the centre of the dial, indicating the luminescent paint in both the hands and numbers are treated with tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen-3 (3H). The luminosity of this chronograph is in very good, readable and original condition.
The 42mm case is a brushed stainless steel with a traditional case construction and military engravings on the case back. The unsigned crown and pump pushers are easily accessible, requiring minimal effort to adjust. This Bundeswehr 1550 SG incorporates the Valjoux 230 flyback chronograph movement which has approximately 48 hours power reserve.
In every respect the Heuer Bundeswehr 1550 SG stands as a refined, solemn symbol of a military aesthetic and a unique subsidiary of iconic Heuer design. This example is in superb condition, showing light fading on the bezel to give a stunning dark grey finish.
