While Heuer’s design language the 1960s was defined by simplicity and a monochrome palette, the brand’s transition into the 1970s saw an explosion of colours, configurations and collections to increase their range. While more affordable editions of the existing Carrera, Autavia and Monaco models were released with the Calibre 15 movement, Heuer manufactured a series of daring new models, such as the Calculator and the Montreal, to turn youthful heads toward the brand. Celebrated for its oversized case and bold colourways, the Montreal is quintessentially ’70s. Notably different from other watches in the range, the Montreal’s innovative design is widely revered by collectors today.
Some fifty years later, TAG Heuer have paid tribute to the original Montreal in through the Carrera 160 Years Limited Edition – a harmony of the brand’s most iconic decades, beautifully showcasing Heuer’s design evolution over 20 years through the ’60s and ’70s. Housed in a 39mm case and powered by a Heuer Calibre 02 movement, this very special CBK221C reference incoporates white, blue, red and yellow in its flamboyant dial – a full palette of primary colours, yet somehow still appearing cohesive and sporty.
Limited to 1000 pieces, this wonderful tribute watch celebrates the unique wonder that Heuer’s Montreal. While likely the closest the Montreal will come to a re-release, it’s a joy to see TAG Heuer continue to pay homage to designs of the past while keeping a firm eye to the future.
