Heuer Ref. 914 Five-Stroke Rowing Timer
An exceptionally rare Heuer sporting instrument, the Ref. 914 was specially developed for rowing and is one of the most unusual stopwatches produced by Heuer.
This example features the distinctive “Base 5 Strokes” rowing scale. By timing five strokes of a crew, the calibrated scale allows the user to immediately determine the crew’s stroke rate per minute. It was a practical and highly precise instrument for coaches, coxswains and rowing timekeepers.
The stopwatch has a large 57mm case and a central 10-second timing scale with a five-minute register. The mechanical movement is a precision lever movement with seven jewels and shock protection.
Dating from the 1950s, the Ref. 914 belongs to an early period in Heuer’s history of producing specialist timing equipment for sport. Examples of the rowing timer are rarely encountered today, making this a particularly desirable piece for the collector of vintage Heuer stopwatches.
A fascinating piece of sporting history and a superb illustration of Heuer’s ability to create highly specialised precision instruments for individual sporting disciplines.
